What are unique visitors?
By unique visitors, we mean the number of different visitors who have visited your website in a given period of time. This is determined from a cookie stored in the visitor's browser.
Measuring unique visitors should not be confused with the number of visits to pages on your website. After all, one person can visit your website several times. In that case, one unique visitor is still counted.
The terminology for visitors and visits on your website differs per analysis tool. Therefore, we have created a clear overview of the terminology of Google Analytics and HubSpot below.
Unique visitors in HubSpot
HubSpot distinguishes between three different terms: visitors, visits and page views.
- Visitors can be compared to unique visitors. It is measured by cookies. A visitor can make multiple visits (or in HubSpot called visits) in a day.
- Visits occur when someone lands on your website. This could occur several times a day. So you can have multiple visits from one visitor in a day. A visit is closed when a visitor leaves the website.
- Page views are measured when your pages are loaded by a visitor. The number of page views per page indicates how often a page is loaded. No distinction is made whether these are from the same visitor or have taken place during the same visit.

In Google Analytics, the structure for measuring visits and visitors is the same. Only different terminology is used here.
Visitors in Google Analytics are users, visits are sessions and page views are described as page views.
