In dit artikel
**Het creëren van een sterk merk is een omvangrijk project waar een flinke portie creativiteit bij komt kijken. Ik kan me zo voorstellen dat je niet zo goed weet waar je moet beginnen. Op commando creatief zijn is bovendien niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Daarom raad ik je aan om eerst je organisatie laag voor laag af te pellen. Zo kom je uiteindelijk tot de kern van wie je bent en wat je doet en kun je jezelf positioneren op de markt. Dat lijkt simpel, maar stiekem is het nog best lastig om goed en helder te formuleren wat je nou precies doet en waarom. Daarom geef ik je in dit blog 8 stappen waarmee je de positioning statement van jouw organisatie kunt formuleren.**
## De positioning statement
De positioning statement is letterlijk een statement en bevat de vier elementen die cruciaal zijn voor jouw marketingboodschap:
Wij bieden* (what) *voor* (who) *door* (how) *omdat* (why).*
In één zin moet duidelijk worden wat er zo bijzonder is aan jouw product of dienst, wie je doelgroep is, wat je positie in de markt is en wat de kernbelofte van jouw organisatie is. Hoewel positionering een echte marketingterm is, is de positioning statement iets wat gecreëerd, herkend en beleefd moet worden vanuit de gehele organisatie. Volg onderstaande stappen om een sterk positioning statement te formuleren.
## Stap 1: Jouw huidige positionering
Misschien heb je in het verleden al weleens een positionering strategie opgezet, misschien ook niet. Vastgelegd of niet, met jouw bedrijfsactiviteiten, marketing en communicatie ben je jezelf (onbewust) al aan het positioneren in de markt. Het is dan ook goed om in te zoomen op wat je nu al doet op het gebied van die positionering. Bekijk je website, je communicatieboodschappen en je bedrijfsstrategie en evalueer waar je op dit moment staat. Formuleer vervolgens welke doelen je wilt bereiken en welke stappen en mensen daarvoor nodig zijn.
## Stap 2: Jouw roeping (de ‘why’)
Tijdens de tweede stap van je positionering ga je vaststellen waarom je eigenlijk in deze business zit. Dit is tenslotte de basis voor al je activiteiten. Stel jezelf de volgende vragen:
- Waarom zit je in deze business (naast winst maken)?
- Wat is het doel of de betekenis van wat je doet?
- Wat inspireert je om elke dag naar je werk te gaan?
- Wat zou je met je bedrijf willen doen als je niks te verliezen had?
Omdat deze vragen over de kern van de organisatie gaan, is het belangrijk om ook input van de CEO of eigenaar te krijgen. Daarnaast is het goed om diverse mensen uit de organisatie te betrekken.
## Stap 3: Jouw ideale klant (de ‘who’)
Nu is het tijd om te bepalen wie de ideale klant is voor jouw organisatie. Veel bedrijven zijn geneigd om een zo groot mogelijke doelgroep aan te spreken. Het gevolg is dat je positionering zo breed is dat je eigenlijk niemand meer aanspreekt. Durf dus keuzes te maken in welk type klant je het liefst zou helpen. Stel jezelf de volgende vragen:
- Welk type klant heb je in het verleden het meest succesvol geholpen?
- In welke industrieën, branches of segmenten blink je uit qua kennis en kunde?
- Met wat voor type bedrijven of klanten werk je het liefst?
## Stap 4: Jouw kerncompetenties (de ‘what’)
De volgende stap is het bepalen van jouw specialisatie. Waar is jouw bedrijf expert of kennisleider in? Dit is je kerncompetentie. Probeer dit zo specifiek mogelijk te maken. Bijvoorbeeld:
Waar weet je het meeste van? > Remote teamwork
Welk aspect van remote teamwork? > Collaboration software
Welk aspect van collaboration software? > User adoption
De volgende vragen kunnen je hierbij helpen:
- Wil je ingezet worden voor wat je doet (productie, levering) of wat je weet (strategie, advies)?
- Waar blink je in uit (ten opzichte van vergelijkbare bedrijven)?
- Welke van jouw producten of diensten bieden de meeste waarde aan je klanten, zijn het meest uniek of bijzonder innovatief?
## Stap 5: Jouw organisatiecultuur (de ‘how’)
De cultuur binnen jouw organisatie is van grote invloed op de keuzes die je maakt. Die keuzes worden namelijk altijd geleid door normen, waarden en principes. Met de volgende vragen formuleer je jouw cultuur:
- Wat zijn de formele of informele normen en waarden die bepalend zijn voor de dienstverlening richting klanten?
- Welke filosofieën of methodes vormen de leidraad voor je dienstverlening?
- Waar sta je écht voor?
## Stap 6: Finaliseren
Nu je dieper bent ingegaan op de why, who, what en how, kun je de positioning statement gaan samenstellen. Doe dat aan de hand van onderstaand template:
Wij bieden* (product / dienst / waarde/ uitkomst) *voor* (een specifiek type bedrijf / branche / markt) *door* (een specifieke aanpak) *omdat* (waarom).*
## Stap 7: Valideren
Als je de positioning statement hebt geformuleerd, is het belangrijk om deze te valideren binnen de organisatie. Kunnen mensen met verschillende functies en van verschillende afdelingen zich herkennen in het statement? Is het statement effectief en duidelijk? Evalueer dit met behulp van een korte survey en pas de positioning statement indien nodig aan op basis van de resultaten.
## Stap 8: Tot leven brengen
Nu de positioning statement definitief is, ga je concrete acties opzetten om het tot leven te brengen. Dit kan in allerlei aspecten van je organisatie. Denk aan je diensten, HR, werkomgeving, interne communicatie en marketing. Zorg bijvoorbeeld dat je content, je website en andere marketinguitingen in lijn liggen met de positioning statement.
## Voorbeeld positioning statement
Hieronder een voorbeeld van de positioning statement van onszelf.
"Wij bieden een allesomvattend pakket omtrent online marketing voor mkb-bedrijven door de verschillende specialiteiten van onze afdelingen te bundelen. Dit doen wij omdat wij onze klanten willen laten groeien en meer online succes willen laten behalen!"
