Waar CSR in het verleden nog een vrijblijvend karakter had, zien zowel B2C als B2B klanten transparantie, duurzaamheid en verantwoordelijkheid steeds meer als een basisvoorwaarde. Dat is niet gek na bijvoorbeeld het paardenvleesschandaal in de vleessector of het Libor-schandaal in de bankensector. De keuze is dus niet meer ‘CSR of geen CSR’, maar ‘CSR of onderscheiden in CSR’ en dit geldt zowel voor grote als kleine organisaties. In dit blogartikel leg ik uit dat CSR-activiteiten van een organisatie zowel interne als externe effecten kunnen hebben. Communiceren over deze CSR-activiteiten is dan ook van belang. ## **De effecten van CSR** Sen en Bhattacharya (2004) schreven een overzichtelijk artikel over wanneer, hoe en waarom stakeholders reageren op CSR en maakten een CSR framework: In dit framework kun je zien dat verschillende partijen belang hebben bij CSR: de organisatie zelf, de consument / klant en de kwestie waar de CSR-activiteit om draait. Uit hun onderzoek blijkt dat CSR-activiteiten het grootste effect hebben op ‘onzichtbare’ zaken zoals attitude, bewustzijn en welzijn. In mindere mate heeft CSR effect op ‘zichtbare’ zaken als koopgedrag, loyaliteit, word-of-mouth en support. De CSR-activiteit zelf speelt overigens ook een grote rol: de activiteit moet bij de organisatie passen. De perceptie van oprechtheid van de CSR-activiteit is namelijk een belangrijke moderator in het effect van CSR. Bovendien kan CSR veel invloed hebben op de reputatie van een organisatie. Uit onderzoeken is gebleken dat nieuws invloed heeft op de reputatie van een organisatie. CSR kan gezien worden als positief nieuws en kan daarom een positief effect hebben op de reputatie. Bovendien kan CSR als een buffer dienen in geval van negatief nieuws of een crisis. ## **Communicatie over CSR** Uit onderzoek blijkt dat het bewustzijn over CSR erg laag is onder stakeholders. Hier is dus een belangrijke taak weggelegd voor Marketing en Communicatie. Wanneer stakeholders zich namelijk niet bewust zijn van de CSR van een organisatie, kan CSR ook geen effect hebben. Hieronder geef ik een aantal voorbeelden van communicatie over CSR: - **Jaarlijks CSR rapport**: een CSR rapport vormt de basis van je CSR strategie. In dit rapport vertel je onder andere over je activiteiten, doelen en successen op het gebied van CSR. Dit doe je aan de hand van feiten, cijfers en statistieken. Probeer een CSR rapport toegankelijk, makkelijk leesbaar en niet te lang te maken. Als dat niet lukt, adviseer ik je om een samenvatting te maken met de meest interessante punten van het uitgebreide rapport. - **CSR op je website**: je website is een goede plek om aandacht te geven aan je CSR-activiteiten. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is de [duurzaamheidswebsite van Colruyt](https://www.colruytgroup.com/nl), een Belgische supermarktketen. Zorg dat je activiteiten, doelen en thema’s in één opslag duidelijk zijn en dat vervolgens degenen die geïnteresseerd zijn meer informatie kunnen bekijken. - **CSR via social media**: social media bieden veel mogelijkheden om CSR wat levendiger en toegankelijker te maken. Doe bijvoorbeeld live verslag van een CSR-activiteit op Twitter met leuke foto’s erbij. - **CSR via blogartikelen**: CSR is natuurlijk heel breed. Het gaat over mensen, de natuur, de producten en de bedrijfsvoering. Deze thema’s bieden tal van onderwerpen waar interessante blogartikelen over kunnen worden geschreven. Zo vergoot je niet alleen het bewustzijn, maar ook de kennis over CSR onder stakeholders. Let op! Stakeholders zijn vaak kritisch en zien al snel of een organisatie oprechte bedoelingen met de CSR strategie heeft of slechts winstgedreven motieven voor ogen heeft. Voorkom greenwashing: het maatschappelijk verantwoorder voordoen dan dat daadwerkelijk het geval is. Zoals ik aan het begin van dit artikel al zei, het is een kwestie van CSR of jezelf onderscheiden in CSR. Dit laatste is weggelegd voor organisaties waarbij CSR diep verankerd in het DNA van de organisatie zit. * * **Bronnen:** Bhattacharya, C. B., & Sen, S. (2004).
