Op deze pagina geven wij je alle antwoorden! ## Thought leadership betekenis Letterlijk vertaald betekent thought leadership *gedachteleiderschap*, maar eigenlijk wordt de term hier niet veel duidelijker van. Het lastige is dat thought leadership zich nogal slecht laat vertalen naar het Nederlands. Het woord *kennisleiderschap* komt onzes inziens het dichtst in de buurt van de werkelijke betekenis, want het draait bij thought leadership voor een groot deel om kennis. **Thought leadership betekent dat een persoon of een bedrijf wordt gezien als een kennisleider binnen een bepaald vakgebied.** Het bedrijf of de persoon wordt dan een *thought leader *genoemd.  De woorden ‘*wordt gezien*’ in bovenstaande definitie zijn erg belangrijk. Een zelfverklaard thought leader heeft geen waarde, anderen moeten je zo zien. Het officieuze predicaat moet je dus verdienen! Je bent pas werkelijk een thought leader wanneer andere mensen binnen het vakgebied je erkennen als zodanig. ## Doelstelling thought leadership Waarom zou een persoon of een organisatie thought leadership willen uitdragen? Wanneer je dit aan tien verschillende mensen vraagt, dan krijg je waarschijnlijk tien verschillende antwoorden. De bottom line is natuurlijk dat organisaties geloven dat zij hier (op lange termijn) commercieel belang bij hebben. De belangrijkste doelstelling voor thought leadership is onderscheidend vermogen. Daarnaast bouw je met thought leadership vertrouwen op bij je doelgroep. Hoe meer relevante inzichten je als thought leader deelt, hoe meer bewijs je levert dat je de uitdagingen van de klant begrijpt en in staat bent om hier oplossingen voor te bieden. In een wereld waarin differentiatie op producten en diensten steeds moeilijker wordt, biedt thought leadership nieuwe kansen. ## Thought leadership opbouwen De hamvraag is nu: hoe draag je consequent thought leadership uit, zodat de markt je gaat (h)erkennen in die rol. Het valt op dat thought leaders vaak de volgende competenties en vaardigheden hebben: - Vooruitstrevend - Visionair - Charismatisch - Vernieuwende blik - Inspirerend - Doorbreken van de status quo Kort gezegd hebben thought leaders twee kenmerkende eigenschappen: - Ze hebben een (vernieuwende) visie. - Ze dragen deze visie uit door middel van kennisdeling. Het helpt wanneer een organisatie charismatische woordvoerders heeft die de visie continu uitdragen en zo potentiële klanten inspireren en motiveren. ## Thought leadership strategie Het probleem van thought leadership is dat het vaak onderschat wordt. Het is niet iets wat de marketingafdeling verzint en ‘even’ realiseert. De hele organisatie moet hierin mee. Dr. Mignon van Halderen en Kym Kettler-Paddock beschrijven in hun artikel [*een bedrijf om na te volgen*](https://www.rsm.nl/fileadmin/Images_NEW/CCC/Mignon_van_Halderen___Kim_Kettler_COM06_ART1.pdf), dat het aanjagen van thought leadership een strategische keuze dient te zijn. Het is een positioneringsstrategie die overeen moet komen met de bedrijfsstrategie. Daarnaast moet de nodige expertise over het thema aanwezig zijn in de organisatie. Ook waarschuwen van Halderen en Kettler-Paddock voor de gevaren van het willen uitdragen van thought leadership. Indien dit verkeerd wordt gedaan, bijvoorbeeld met te weinig diepgang of commitment, dan loop je het gevaar dat de markt het beschouwt als een PR-stunt of marketingcampagne. Je bereikt dan niet je doel en zult nooit worden gezien als ware thought leader. Om thought leadership op een correcte manier aan te jagen, bieden van Halderen en Kettler-Paddock een thought leadership framework met de volgende stappen: ![Thought Leadership strategie](https://www.brightdigital.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Thought%20Leadership%20strategie.png?width=1560&height=737&name=Thought%20Leadership%20strategie.png) ### **Stap 1: diagnose van het potentieel** De eerste stap is het bepalen van het potentieel voor thought leadership. Het is belangrijk om hierbij kritisch te bekijken of de organisatie in huis heeft wat nodig is om thought leadership te bereiken. Vier vragen spelen hier een centrale rol: 1.  Welke thema’s leven echt bij onze klanten? 2. Hebben we een vernieuwend perspectief op deze thema’s 3. Past dit bij onze kennis en expertise? 4. Beschikken we over de juiste middelen om dit perspectief serieus in te bedden in de bedrijfsstrategie en uitvoering ervan? ### **Stap 2: formuleren van een vernieuwende visie** De vernieuwende visie is de kern van de thought leadership-strategie. Het is dan ook cruciaal dat deze visie goed geformuleerd wordt en consistent wordt uitgedragen door de organisatie.  De medewerkers moeten deze visie dragen. Hiermee gaat de organisatie de visie als het ware ‘ademen’. ### **Stap 3: kennis delen** Het delen van kennis is cruciaal voor een thought leadership-strategie. De kennis die je deelt is direct gelinkt aan de vernieuwende visie van de organisatie. Er zijn diverse manieren om kennis te delen. In content marketing en inbound marketing delen we kennis met name online: - White papers - (Blog)artikelen - Handleidingen - Checklists - Webinars - Video’s - Case studies Belangrijk hierbij is dat je werkelijk investeert in het delen van kennis. Zorg dat deze kennis diep inhoudelijk is. De kennis in de organisatie ligt bij inhoudelijk experts, zoals bijvoorbeeld consultants. Niet alle experts zijn gewend om kennis (openlijk) te delen. Daarnaast dienen zij er ook tijd voor te krijgen van hun managers. Dit is een van de redenen dat thought leadership geen marketingfeestje kan zijn. Daarnaast zullen niet alle aspecten van het thema dat je hebt uitgekozen, gesneden koek zijn voor de medewerkers in je organisatie. Het uitvoeren van onderzoek kan hierbij helpen, maar denk ook aan het inschakelen van externe experts. Dit verhoogt je geloofwaardigheid enorm! ### **Stap 4: starten van een community rondom het thema** Niet de meest gemakkelijk stap in het stappenplan, maar het is enorm krachtig wanneer je in staat bent om een community te starten rondom het thought leadership-thema. Op dit platform speel je zelf een centrale, faciliterende rol. Het ultieme resultaat is dat de mensen die participeren in dit netwerk jouw bedrijf gaan associëren met het thema. Om de community van de grond te krijgen is het noodzakelijk om externe experts op het thema te laten participeren, dit stimuleert betrokkenheid. Dit kunnen verschillende mensen zijn: - Specialisten op een vakgebied - Branchespecialisten - Opinieleiders - Trendwatchers - Vakgenoten - Hoogleraren of professoren Het opzetten van een community biedt ook andere bijkomende voordelen. Zo heb je altijd toegang tot een bron van kennis en bouw je relaties op met mensen die je verder kunnen brengen in het thought leadership-thema. ### **Stap 5: vernieuwend perspectief omzetten naar actie** Het uitdragen van thought leadership gaat verder dan alleen het delen van kennis. De organisatie dient continu actie te ondernemen op het thema en hierbij resultaten te boeken. Deel daarom resultaten die je samen met (of voor) klanten hebt bereikt. Harde cijfers werken het best. Schrijf bijvoorbeeld case studies waarbij je berekent hoeveel jouw klant heeft bespaart of gewonnen door met jouw organisatie in zee te gaan. Uiteraard dienen deze feiten gebaseerd te zijn op harde feiten. ## Thought leadership voorbeeld Een van de bekendste voorbeelden van thought leadership is dat van Apple, of beter gezegd dat van Steve Jobs. Als Steve Jobs érgens mee wordt geassocieerd dan is het wel met zijn vernieuwende ideeën. Toen hij verkondigde dat hij een computer wilde maken met een gesloten systeem, keken zijn techneuten hem aan alsof hij gek was. Wat?! Consumenten willen toch computers die zo veel mogelijk applicaties kunnen draaien en hardware die ze zelf kunnen upgraden? Jobs vond van niet. Een open systeem betekent dat zowel hardware- als softwareontwikkelaars concessies moeten doen (rekening moeten houden met elkaars mogelijkheden) en daar was Jobs niet van gediend. Tegen alle stemmen in, ging hij voor een compleet gesloten systeem. De rest is geschiedenis. Voor het uitdragen van zijn thought leadership koos Jobs vooral voor grote presentaties. [Volgens Simon Sinek](https://youtu.be/u4ZoJKF_VuA?t=205) had Jobs succes omdat hij altijd begon met het vertellen van het ‘waarom’ achter het product. Vervolgens ging hij in op hoe hij dit voor elkaar had gekregen en pas op het laatst vertelde hij precies wat hij introduceerde. Zijn charismatische, maar bescheiden voorkomen hielp hem om succes te behalen. Ook deed Jobs veel uitspraken die (in die tijd) heel vernieuwend waren en tegen de status quo in gingen. Zijn visie werd bekrachtigd door resultaat – producten, die precies in lijn lagen met datgene waar Jobs voor stond. ## Ook thought leadership uitdragen?
