**In marketingland wordt vaak gesproken over het genereren van leads. Maar wat is dat nu eigenlijk precies een [lead](https://www.brightdigital.com/nl/blog/wat-is-een-lead)? Er zijn verschillende definities. In dit blog leggen we je daarom uit wat een lead is en daarnaast vertellen we je hoe je een lead kunt herkennen op jouw website. **

## Wat is een lead?

Een lead is een consument die op één of andere manier interesse heeft getoond in de producten of diensten die jouw bedrijf levert. Dat kan dus een bezoeker op je website zijn die via een contactformulier meer informatie aanvraagt over een bepaald product dat jouw bedrijf levert. In feite ben je dus een potentiële klant op het spoor. Dit kan resulteren in een doodlopend spoor, maar kan net zo goed een verkoop van je product of dienst opleveren. In dat laatste geval transformeer je de lead tot klant.

## Het verschil tussen een lead en een prospect

In marketingtermen wordt vaak niet enkel gesproken over leads, maar heeft men het ook over prospects. Maar wat is nu precies het verschil tussen een lead en een prospect? In veel gevallen zijn deze termen uitwisselbaar voor elkaar. Toch is er een verschil. Prospects passen namelijk in het profiel van een potentiële klant, maar vragen niet direct om informatie. Terwijl leads juist wel contactinformatie achterlaten en concrete interesse tonen in je product of dienst. In de marketingwereld wordt een prospect die gestart is met het vertonen van koopgedrag daarom vaak als een lead bestempeld. Eigenlijk kun je dus stellen dat leads net een stapje verder zijn in hun klantreis dan prospects.

## Hoe herken je een lead?

Leads kunnen op allerlei manieren in contact komen met jouw bedrijf. Dat kan offline via bijvoorbeeld je netwerk, maar kan net zo goed online zijn. Online kun je iemand als een lead bestempelen als deze persoon:

- Een contactformulier heeft ingevuld op de contactpagina van je website en daarbij zijn contactgegevens heeft achtergelaten
- Een whitepaper op je website heeft gedownload in ruil voor zijn e-mailadres
- Zich met zijn of haar e-mailadres heeft ingeschreven voor je maandelijkse nieuwsbrief

Ook al zou je het graag zo zien, helaas is het niet zo dat iedereen die in contact komt met je bedrijf direct een lead is. Het kan immers ook zo zijn dat een concurrent op je site rond zit te neuzen en zichzelf uit interesse inschrijft voor je nieuwsbrief. Zo iemand is natuurlijk geen lead.

## Leads scoren met goede content

In dit blogartikel hebben we voor je in kaart proberen te brengen wat een lead is. Uiteraard is het in de praktijk zo dat elk bedrijf op zijn eigen manier leads classificeert. Er is namelijk een stukje grijs gebied tussen bijvoorbeeld een prospect en een lead. Daarnaast kun je ook nog onderscheid maken tussen leads die klaar zijn voor sales en leads die daar nog niet klaar voor zijn.
