HubSpot coined the term "Smarketing" to express how important it is for your sales and marketing teams to be on the same page. It is hugely important that both departments have direct contact with each other on a regular basis. For example, if the sales team lets the marketing team know what type of leads most often convert into customers, then marketing can steer accordingly.
By setting measurable goals for sales and marketing, both parties are clearly accountable and involved in the process of bringing in customers. For example, for marketing, you set goals about the quantity and quality of leads they need to bring in. For sales, you determine how many of those leads should be followed up within a certain amount of time and how many of them should convert to a customer.
